‘You said – we did’

In February 2014 five local patient events were held to present the plans for the NEEDS service and obtain patient feedback to help shape it ready for launch in April 2014. Over 150 diabetes patients attended the events and 74 questionnaires were returned.

Below is a summary of what patients said they would like from the service and how their feedback and ideas have been put into action.

YOU SAID…

WE DID…

“We want more local support groups” We are supporting the further development and expansion of the current Patient Forums in Colchester and Clacton. We are also looking to establish patient-led support groups in Harwich, Jaywick and Walton-on-the-Naze.
“We want more education and better access to courses” We are running structured courses for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes including DAFNE, DESMOND, X-PERT, Educare and Conversation Maps, which will be held in local community venues across North East Essex. Note: Educare is available online or via paper-based learning, not classroom style. We are also partnering Diabetes UK on a Peer Education & Support Project and are planning to offer other forms of patient education and support on a less formal basis, such as training patient ‘buddies’ who can share their own experiences to help others.
“We want a helpline” We have set up the NEEDS telephone helpline which enables access to help and advice.
“We want better support and training for nurses and GP’s” We are providing incentives, support and training to GP’s and nurses across the whole of North East Essex and this is being well received.
“We want regular check-ups and consistent care” Making sure that all patients receive an annual review is one of our key targets and we will be monitoring this closely.
“We want more support for newly diagnosed” One of the NEEDS targets is to offer all newly-diagnosed patients the opportunity to attend a structured education course within 12 months of diagnosis.
“We want more patient information (not just online) and a newsletter” We have a NEEDS website, Facebook and Twitter accounts and have also circulated NEEDS leaflets and posters to local GP surgeries and other locations. The first patient newsletter will be distributed in June 2014 and patients are being encouraged to attend forums and support groups to access other information.
“We want better access to local foot care” Regular foot checks are provided by GP’s as part of the essential eight care processes. Where required, GPs will refer patients to one of the podiatry clinics (delivered by Anglian Community Enterprise CIC (ACE) in community settings.
“We want online chats and social media” We have set up both a Facebook and Twitter page for the NEEDS service and will develop these as we get more friends and followers.
“We want annual versions of the patient engagement events” We have scheduled the next patient events for 2015, where we will be able to report on the progress of the service over the first year and discuss what we are planning in year two.
“We want other local groups” We are beginning to run focus groups in Harwich, Jaywick and Walton-on-Naze to establish the interest in setting up further diabetes patient groups in these areas.
